I recently came across a note I had taken a few years ago of a conversation with Jack. He must have been 7 or 8.
“Mom, have you ever gotten a smart shock?”
“What’s a smart shock?” I asked.
“It’s when you know what a word means when you’ve never heard it before. You probably heard it before but you don’t know what it means. I had a smart shock when I was five. I suddenly knew what the word ‘independent’ meant. I suddenly knew it meant working solo, single, solitaire, all of that.”
