My son has been in the same situation too, that is suffering the consequences for other people's bad behavior. He also feels unjustly punished. It's very sad to see them go through this. It's terribly unfair.

Some parents make you feel sorry for the schools who have to put up with them. Especially in private schools parents think they own the place. And they pay so much money you can't blame them!

My son has had a similar experience, although it had racial overtones. We now homeschool. I find out the depth of the abuse gradually. "how do you know so much about the ______ flag, I didn't know that they covered this in school?" he answers-"that is what the older kids shouted at me as they scraped the back of my hands across the brick wall." and "Why do you get mad at me when I can't say your teacher's name right, I don't know how to make those sounds?" my son replies, "She made me repeat her name over and over again and yelled at me because I couldn't say it right. I was the only one in class who couldn't."
My conclusion- Like the commercial about banks, kids know when they're being mistreated. We need to listen and do something about it.

Dear Anonymous (on March 3), you're absolutely right about the racial overtones. It just has a way of creeping in there. Read Part 7 of this series. That's where I touch on the racial stuff. It's never too far.

This is an account of one family’s experience at a celebrated private school in our city. I write it partly to put an unpleasant experience behind us and partly as a way to complete a story I have been telling other parents and educators in snatches. I believe the community at large will benefit from directing a critical eye toward claims of excellence that justify the funds and labor that private schools require of parents. I have changed the name of the school because this is not an attempt at vindication. More
